Outreach - Exhibition
Date : Friday, 26 April 2019 at 00:00:00
Subject : 'Family Tree Live' Exhibition
We will be attending this exhibition on Friday and Saturday, 26th and 27th April. This is a new development in our outreach activities. having been approached to help promote the Railway Work, Life and Death Project. This Project is trying to find out more practical information about railway worker accidents from the late Victorian period to the Second World War. It is a collaboration between the NRM, The National Archives and the University of Portsmouth, supported by the Friends and a team of NRM volunteers. Whilst the records focus on safety incidents and ways of preventing them, by describing what the people concerned were doing - and why, how and where they were doing it - the Project is building up a lot of information of interest to those whose ancestors worked on the railways. Painting a detailed picture of the jobs, trades and skills needed to operate and maintain the pre- and post-grouping railways on a daily basis, it covers the work of, for example, the permanent way platelayers and undermen, the bridge painters, the goods porters and capstanmen, the shunters and footplate crews. As a result, we are expecting a lot of interest at the Alexandra Palace show, and it gives us a good opportunity to wave the flag for the NRM and the Friends: no selling this time, just lots of talking to show off the Project.
